Greg's Tip: If you are working at sea and you are flying a long way to join the ship; often a hotel will be supplied by the cruise line (sometimes even a suite in a top brand named hotel). If for some reason they can't fly you home on the day you disembark; they will put you in a hotel also. However, it is often cheaper for the cruiseline to fly you home indirectly which can leave an opening to break up the journey and fly home via somewhere else. An example of this was my flight home from San Juan, Puerto Rico to London Heathrow. It cost $15 less to fly via New York in both directions so I used to persuade the travel department to break the journey by a couple of days each way so I could visit friends free of charge. Even though it benefits you and the cruise line; some persuasion may be needed and this will not happen with every cruiseline but there's no harm in asking. Having got your free flight you can book your accommodation above and save money.
