  • Greg's tip: Don't forget when shopping onshore; find out the local customs. A lot of places assume you will barter with them and price accordingly. In other places it is considered rude. Do not buy things you wouldn't buy at home! Carpet salesmen in places such as Turkey and Morocco can be very persuasive. If you don't want to buy; avoid eye contact. Be careful of sales people who sell something in an attempt to rob you whilst you are distracted. One common example are some Spanish flower sellers who's children rob your pockets as you pay for flowers. When shopping in foreign ports, try to wear clothing that complements the average. You are less likely to be ripped off. For instance, in ports like Morocco, Senagal etc. wearing brand new jeans and trainers suggests that you have money to waste and are a target. Locals wear warn jeans or trousers and plain shirts. Wearing similar attire and looking comfortable with it can give the impression that you may not be a tourist and can avoid you being hassled. Being accepted as if you are a local can be a very pleasurable and far less stressful experience!
