  • Greg's tip: If you are hiring from on shore, make sure you find out what your insurance covers you for whenever hiring a car. The price may look good but may leave you liable for legal costs if something goes wrong, or may have a very high excess meaning a big bill in spite of cover, or may not actually be insuring you at all. Sure, every car hire place will tell you not to worry but if they have your credit card details then you do need to worry. The only exception to the rule I have experienced was a rental of a Jeep on the island of Cozumel (off Mexico) where we were allowed to rent the car for cash without leaving an address. We parked the car around the corner and put the keys through the letter box after a gust of wind had taken the convertible roof off into the sea (which we were unable to recover in spite of at least 10 minutes of serious effort). Check the engine for oil and water before you drive the car away to avoid being stranded like I was in Barbados once after the engine over heated and eventually burst into flames. Remember: You cannot afford to miss the ship! Also remember that mopeds and motor bikes are dangerous everywhere! You won't get any sympathy if you drive one over a sea wall into the sea (which I have seen happen in Bermuda to my amusement as a spectator) or if you injure yourself (which is amazingly common). It could cost you your time at sea so best to avoid (18 crew members went off as a group in Rhodes, Greece once. Only 3 came back uninjured. The crew mess looked like an accident and emergency ward. There are better ways to spend a day in the sun on a beautiful island)!
